I hope you enjoy my watercolor paintings. Come along with me to explore places near and far.
"Painting en plein air is wonderful, frustrating, transforming, challenging, and enriching. Soaking up the sights, sounds, and smells, feeling the heat of the sun or the blast of a cold wind, holding a paintbrush in one hand while grabbing a bite of local food with the other, all combine to help me capture what I feel about the subject. Bugs in my paint? They just add texture!"
On a Colorado creek in 1997 I plunged into the world of watercolor...starting from scratch and falling in love with working en plein air. In the following years master teacher and mentor, Jane E. Jones, guided me through an intense education in art and led me to workshops in the United States, Mexico, and France. From there more than twenty other classes continued to expand my skills and horizons. On my first trip to Italy, Californian Charlotte Britton emerged as another major influence.
My watercolor paintings, influenced by a love of quilts, mosaics and stained glass, are puzzles of simplified shapes and enhanced colors. When on location, simple ink and watercolor washes or even pencil sketches are used to create a composition and capture a memory of a scene. These are used as reference and inspiration back in the studio. The magic of grains of pigment swimming in water and flowing into the paper captures my mind and heart. I love the whole process.
